Hummerzine
Defined: Oxymoron on Wheels
By Sarah Klein Staff Reporter
With
its short, squat, tank-like build and combat-ready design,
the military Hummer is not likely to be thought of as a luxury
vehicle.
The Hummerzine,
a hybrid of a Hummer and a stretch limousine, complete with
televisions, a wet bar on each end, and a first-class audio
system has arrived.
To see it for
yourself, cruise by Limousine Express at Ryan and 12 Mile
roads In Warren, where a Hummerzlne is parked out front, ready
to whisk you away in attention-grabbing style.
Co-owner of Limousine
Express Mike Garian said there are only two other Hummerzines
In Metro Detroit. Made by California-based Ultra Coach, the
vehicle has a General Motors engine, seats 16 people, is about
23 feet long and 7 feet wide, and cost Garian $14O,OOO.
"It's a head
turner," said Garlan. If you're going to ride somewhere
people are definitely going to look at you."
Garian
said the Hummerzine fad started about three years ago mostly
in Florida and California. He said the vehicle has been very
popular for proms and among predominantly male bar-hoppers
out for a night on the town, although it is rented occasionally
for weddings.
Garian also said
the Hummerzine is a popular choice for celebrities who live
in or are visiting the Detroit area. Chris Webber and Queen
Latifah have rented it, and the Hummerzlne is a favorite of
area musician Kenny Olson, who plays guitar for local rapper
turned national star, Kid Rock.
Garian only lets
his most senior drivers behind the wheel of the Hummerzine,
since he says it's difficult to maneuver and a "rough
ride" The Hummerzlne is equipped with two gas tanks and
usually goes through at least one tank per rental.
So far, Garian
feels the Hummezine was worth the investment since it is rented
an average of two to three times a week. He also rents a number
of traditional limousines and other novelty luxury vehicle
including the 1961 Cadillac that appeared in the James Bond
movie "Goldfinger"
